Stocks today News that move stocks today. Investing and finance news. “Retailers Dick’s Sports Goods (DKS) and Nordstrom (JWN) reported quarterly results before market open and after market close yesterday, respectively, that underscored the growing rift in performance between big-box retailers that have captured new consumer trends during the pandemic, and those that have struggled to keep pace. Dick’s Sporting Goods delivered comparable same-store sales growth of 21%, or more than double the 10% increase consensus analysts had expected. The results came as consumers increasingly took part in socially distant outdoor activities and exercise, and turned to Dick’s Sporting Goods for equipment, according to CEO Ed Stack in this morning’s earnings release. E-commerce sales jumped 194% in the quarter. Still, the company’s comparable sales slowed to an 11% jump in the first three weeks of the current quarter, with a slower back-to-school season weighing on results. Nordstrom, on the other hand, missed consensus expectations on the top and bottom lines, with net sales down 53% over last year. The company was hit by both store closures and the delay of its annual anniversary sale to August from July due to the pandemic. Nordstrom decreased inventory by more than 25% as a move to mitigate markdowns and pad margins – however, the company still posted a wider than expected loss in the quarter, with adjusted losses of $1.54 per share.” Stock market data: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/stock-market-news-live-august-26-2020-222001077.html

Economic recession and the stock market What is an economic recession and how it may have an effect on the stock market? “In economics, a recession is a business cycle contraction when there is a general decline in economic activity. Recessions generally occur when there is a widespread drop in spending (an adverse demand shock). This may be triggered by various events, such as a financial crisis, an external trade shock, an adverse supply shock, the bursting of an economic bubble, or a large-scale natural or anthropogenic disaster (e.g. a pandemic). In the United States, it is defined as “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the market, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales”. In the United Kingdom, it is defined as a negative economic growth for two consecutive quarters. Governments usually respond to recessions by adopting expansionary macroeconomic policies, such as increasing money supply or increasing government spending and decreasing taxation.” Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recession A decline of the economic activity is bad news for the stock market and the general economy We like the definition that an economic recession “is defined as a negative economic growth for two consecutive quarters.” mentioned above. For the US economy, we had the first quarter of negative economic growth, and most probably the second quarter of 2020 will be even worse in terms of negative economic growth. The weekly jobless claims still show that many people file for unemployment insurance benefits. And many companies warn about their future profitability or avoid to make any forecasts at all. It will be a tough year to choose stocks to buy and stocks to sell. Why? Fundamentals should never be ignored about stocks and their valuation. And still, any selloffs may lead to short-term rallies as bargain hunters search for cheap stocks. Cheap stocks mostly related to their stock price, not their intrinsic valuation. Stocks to avoid Which stocks to avoid in an imminent economic recession? A few criteria to focus on for stock selection, investing and trading are: Large amount of debt, weak balance sheets, poor profitability, negative or declining free cash flows are all signs of weakness. Declining revenue growth, EPS growth same as above Stocks with an abnormal price increase without any catalyst to suppot the rally are prone to correction Stocks with a very high P/E or even worse a negative P/E are dangerous stocks Defensive stocks, such as Utilities, Consumer Staples, Healthcare, are considered safer stocks during an economic recession.
A stock market rally today, Dow today is up more than 600 points All three major stock indexes have gains of more than 2%, as of 3:27 PMWednesday, April 8, 2020, Eastern Time (ET). What is the reason for today’s stock market rally? “U.S. stocks were rising on Wednesday with investors hoping that the U.S. could roll back containment measures put in place to fight the COVID-19 pandemic sooner than expected. The buoyant sentiment in stocks also may have reflected the announcement that Bernie Sanders had suspended his campaign for the U.S. presidency, leaving former vice-president Joe Biden to compete with President Trump in November’s elections.” Source: https://www.marketwatch.com/story/dow-futures-aim-for-a-subdued-open-a-day-after-the-most-dramatic-u-turn-for-stocks-in-12-years-2020-04-08?siteid=yhoof2&yptr=yahoo Why a stock market bottom is yet to be confirmed Stocks rise today. But for all stocks now this is just irrational exuberance. We wrote yesterday about Boeing stock. Shares of Boeing continue to rise today, half an hour before the close of the trading session. We will soon have the quarterly earnings reports to evaluate the negative effect of the coronavirus outbreak. Tomorrow we will have the weekly numbers for the US initial jobless claims and continuing claims. A better than expected figure is considered positive for the US economy. But any negative surprise may lead to profit-taking for stock trading, stock investing. I think that the momo effect (momentum trading) is now responsible for the recent bounce in the stock market. But I am not sure that the stock market has fully discounted the negative results in profitability, cash flows and valuation for stocks yet.

Stock market volatility index VIX reached the highest level in history as Dow plunged almost 3,000 points ” A measure of implied volatility on Wall Street touched its highest level in history as all three stock benchmarks plunged by at least 12% Monday, marking one of the worst declines for equities in a generation, as fears about a long, hard slog with COVID-19, the infectious disease that originated in China last year, slammed assets considered risky. The CBOE Volatility Index jumped by about 44% in a single session, to close above 82, marking its highest finish in history, surpassing two readings of 80 that it registered during the 2008 financial crisis, if the index holds at that level. The index, also known as the VIX, for its ticker symbol, has become well known as Wall Street’s “fear gauge,” since it was created in the early 1990s. The VIX is a gauge of investor expectations for stock-market turbulence in the coming 30-day period, tracking S&P 500 index options contracts and had traded at a historic average between 19 and 20. Because the index often rises as stocks fall, it is viewed as a hedge against market turbulence. On Monday, turbulence was rampant as President Donald Trump issued new guidelines in dealing with the virus, including limiting gatherings to fewer than 10 people. He also said that the pandemic could be an issue for the U.S. into July, killing any hopes for a conclusion to the threat once the weather warms. The comments helped drag the Dow Jones Industrial Average down by 2,997.10 points, or 12.93%, to 20,188.52, the S&P 500 index dropped 11.98% to 2,386.13, while the Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 12.32% to 6,904, marking that technology-heavy index’s worst one-day fall in its history. For the S&P 500 it was their third worst day in its record and for the Dow, it was the second worst point decline in history. “ Source: https://finance.yahoo.com/m/b1a7ecc9-84cb-39bd-be21-2592f382dd5c/wall-street-s-fear-index-.html Stock market data: Yahoo Finance Trading and Investing Check this link if you are interested in trading.
