Stock market today

A mixed close today for the US stock market. Dow Jones closed higher, but both S&P 500 and Nasdaq had losses. The closing numbers for the US stock maket today follow.

S&P 500: 3,909.88,-1.35(-0.03%)

Nasdaq: 13,972.53,-35.16(-0.25%)
Russell 2000: 2,282.44,-16.56(-0.72%)

Stock market news today

“Stocks turned mostly lower Wednesday and the S&P 500 logged a second day of declines.

The Dow ended a tick above the flat line while both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended lower after rising to reach record highs shortly after market open. However, all three major indexes have performed strongly for February to date, as has the small-cap Russell 2000, which reached its own record high before turning slightly lower.

Companies that reported quarterly results in the last day largely topped expectations, adding to the pile of estimates-topping reports for last quarter.

Lyft’s stock (LYFT) surged more than 8% after the company said it could be profitable as soon as the third quarter this year, or a full quarter ahead of earlier estimates, thanks to rigorous cost-cutting measures. Shares of Twitter (TWTR) jumped 9% after the company’s sales grew more than expected and its profit beat estimates, though it warned that user growth will likely slow in 2021 after a pandemic-era boom.

So far, companies comprising more than three-quarters of the S&P 500’s market capitalization have reported fourth-quarter results. In aggregate, these results have topped expectations by nearly 17%, and 80% of companies beat their own projections, according to an analysis by Credit Suisse’s Jonathan Golub.

But even amid strong earnings and supportive monetary and fiscal policy, some strategists have begun to debate whether the recent leg higher in markets can be sustained in the very near-term as sentiment starts to get frothy.”

Stock market today

The US stock market closed little changed today. The closing numbers for the US stock market today follow.

S&P 500: 3,911.23,-4.36(-0.11%)
Dow 30: 31,375.83,-9.93(-0.03%)
Nasdaq: 14,007.70,+20.06(+0.14%)
Russell 2000: 2,299.00,+9.24(+0.40%)

Stock market news

“Stocks ended mixed on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and Dow ending a six-session winning streak while the Nasdaq powered to a record high.

The S&P 500 ticked just below the flat line, and the Dow ended a choppy session lower. The Nasdaq eked out record intraday and closing highs, closing above 14,000 for the first time ever. The small-cap Russell 2000 extended its winning streak to seven consecutive sessions and also closed at a record level.

Bitcoin prices (BTC-USD) surged more than 10% to close in on $48,000, adding to a record-setting rally triggered after Tesla (TSLA) disclosed it had purchased $1.5 billion worth of the cryptocurrency earlier this week.

Prospects for more stimulus out of Washington have remained a major driver of equities over the past week. Congressional committees this week are set to work out details of the legislation for another virus-relief package, which is expected to include another round of $1,400 stimulus checks, hundreds of billions of dollars in state and local aid and an extension to enhanced federal unemployment benefits beyond their current March end date. Goldman Sachs economists increased their 2021 and 2022 annual U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecasts by 0.2 percentage points each to 6.8% and 4.5%, respectively, amid their expectations for an eventual stimulus package worth $1.5 trillion, according to a note Monday.

But even in absence of additional stimulus, corporate America has already been showing signs of a stronger-than-expected rebound, with fourth-quarter earnings results blowing past estimates. More than three-quarters of S&P 500 companies have so far reported earnings results, and 66% have beaten expectations for both sales and profit, according to a Bank of America analysis.

“Corporate earnings have defied a shrinking economy: 4Q EPS [earnings per share] for the S&P 500 is now up 0.3% YoY vs. -2.5% YoY in GDP,” Bank of America strategist Savita Subramanian wrote in a note Monday. Heading into fourth-quarter earnings season, consensus analysts expected that S&P 500 companies would, in aggregate, post another earnings decline.”

Another higher US stock market close today. The closing numbers for the US stock market today follow.

S&P 500: 3,915.59,+28.76(+0.74%)
Dow 30: 31,385.76,+237.52(+0.76%)
Nasdaq: 13,987.64,+131.35(+0.95%)
Russell 2000: 2,289.76,+56.43(+2.53%)

Stock market news

“Stocks rose on Monday, extending advances after stocks’ best week since November last week.

The Dow added more than 200 points, or about 0.8%, to a fresh record high, and both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also reached record intraday levels. The S&P 500’s six-day winning streak marked its longest since August, and the Dow posted its best start to a February since 1931 with a rise of 4.7% so far for the month. Bitcoin prices spiked more than 12% to a record high of more than $43,000 after Tesla disclosed it purchased $1.5 billion of the cryptocurrency and may start allowing customers to use Bitcoin to purchase products.

Investor optimism over another round of fiscal stimulus out of Washington helped boost U.S. equities over the past week. A disappointing monthly jobs report last week bolstered the case for additional support to households and businesses, according to lawmakers including President Joe Biden. And Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told CBS on Sunday the U.S. could return to full employment by 2022 – or two to three years ahead of some current projections – if measures in Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan were enacted.”

Stock market today

A higher close for the US stock market today. Small-cap stocks outperformed. The closing numbers for the US stock market today.

S&P 500: 3,886.83,+15.09(+0.39%)
Dow 30: 31,148.24,+92.38(+0.30%)
Nasdaq: 13,856.30,+78.55(+0.57%)
Russell 2000: 2,233.33,+30.91(+1.40%)

Stock market news

“Stocks rose, reaching fresh record levels after a closely watched report on the labor market missed expectations, possibly making a case for additional fiscal stimulus.

Each of the three major equity indexes traded higher, and the S&P 500, Dow and Nasdaq posted their best weekly gains since November. The S&P 500 rose 4.6% for the week.

Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also ended at record closing highs, and the Dow neared its own recent all-time closing high. Friday’s January jobs report showed that the U.S. economy returned to adding back more jobs than it lost at the start of this year, but at a slower than expected rate.

The areas of outperformance in the markets this week fit “into three of the potential rotation trades that we’re closely monitoring for 2021,” Kevin Mahn, Hennion & Walsh chief investment officer, told Yahoo Finance on Thursday. “The first being smaller cap stocks starting to outperform larger cap stocks, given the excessive valuation that large cap stocks are currently trading at … emerging stocks outperforming U.S. stocks, and then that potential rotation from growth-oriented stocks value oriented stocks.”

Over the past five days, the energy sector has been the best performing sector in the S&P 500 as crude oil prices recovered, given prospects for stronger demand for travel and fuel later this year. The financials sector also outperformed as Treasury yields firmed. The Russell 2000 has also outperformed the S&P 500 this week and so far in 2021, with small cap stocks typically leading the way higher during economic recoveries. The small-cap index hit a record closing high on Friday, and posted its best weekly gain since June.

But while some large-cap and growth stocks may seem lofty based on some traditional measures, they may also grow into these valuations given the strong earnings results posted so far for the fourth quarter, some strategists said. The majority of S&P 500 companies that have reported fourth-quarter results thus far have beaten expectations, and many by a wide margin.”

Stock market news

“Stocks sank Wednesday as investors digested the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) January monetary policy decision and latest batch of corporate earnings results.

In its January policy statement, the Federal Reserve underscored the recent deterioration in economic data amid the ongoing pandemic, saying that, “The pace of the recovery in economic activity and employment has moderated in recent months. This language was updated from the Fed’s December statement, which simply noted that economic activity and employment were still “well below their levels” from the start of 2020.

As expected, the central bank kept benchmark interest rates unchanged at their near-zero level, and recommitted to leaving rates untouched until labor market conditions and inflation trends achieved the Fed’s targets. The Fed also said it would continue its crisis-era asset purchase program at the current rate of $120 billion per month.”
